ultrasound #2 and other things

We had our second ultrasound on Monday. Again, we got to see a strong heartbeat and growth in the baby. The gestational sac is still measuring small, which concerns me a great deal but we just have to wait and see. The dr says all we know for now is that we see a strong heartbeat, a fetal pole, and growth in the baby. We just hope the sac catches up. Honestly, she didn't seem too concerned. She was very positive and excited for us.

That brings us to our next task of finding a regular obgyn. The first problem is that I really want to see a woman. Why are there so few female obgyns??? It doesn't make sense. We are looking at 3 practices and each of them only have 1 woman. We also currently live between 2 cities so we need to decide where we want to deliver. The practice that is probably our first choice has one woman, but she is a DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine), not an MD. I honestly have no idea what that really means and what the difference is. Anyone have experience with or knowledge of DOs?

  1. So glad to hear good news. A DO tends to be more homeopathic and more holistic. They are as qualified as an MD, they just focus more on overall health. If you like that, it's a good choice. I would meet her to decide.

  2. It's all a matter of preference. Some people prefer MDs because they like the sole Western medicine approach. Others like DO because they are more holistic. Both are licensed to practice, so one is not necessarily better than the other. I'd make an appointment and meet with her. Having a good repport with your doctor is far more important than where they went to medical school.

  7. Congrats on your pregnancy and a good strong heartbeat! Hope all continues to go well for you...
My first OB was a DO...the only one in a practice full of MDs, and I think medically my care with her was top-notch. I didn't feel super comfortable with her on a personal level, and she actually ended up committing suicide, but none of that had anything to do with her being a DO. I'm with an MD now in the same practice, and like her a lot but feel like things are less thorough now (the MD pretty much looks at me and says "you're fine", whereas the DO took time to point out things on the ultrasound, answer my questions, etc.)
Bottom line, I would go with a DO again no problem.
    Hope this helps...

  8. Congrats on your little one growing. There is only so much you can control with delivery. There was only one OB in my practice that was male and he ended up to be the one who delivered my DS.

    Best of luck. Happy ICLW!

  9. Stopping by from ICLW!
I hope your pregnancy continues to be successful. When I was pregnant the 2nd time around, my dr told me to just stay positive - its the only thing we can control in this whole process and in the end, it will be better for the baby. Although the pregnancy ended in M/c, I really tried to adhear to the drs advice. I give you the same advice and am hoping for a different outcome than what I had!
